Exit polls showed a substantial majority of voters thought Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is unqualified to be president, while a larger majority felt Sen. Joe Biden is qualified. Instead of helping Sen. John McCain, she proved to be a drag on his campaign. He made a rash choice in the selection of his running mate, and it cost him.
This public recognition that Palin isn’t up to the nation’s top job should give pause to those Republicans who have begun suffering from the delusion that she is the future of their party.

Larry Dale Keeling, a columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader, has spent most of his 35-plus years in journalism reporting on or writing editorials and columns about Kentucky’s politics and political issues. He now brings his experience and expertise on those topics to the KyKurmudgeon blog.
The only reason McCain got as close as he did was because of Palin… McCain is not the future of the party, appeasement was defeated last night, not Palin.
Larry,
Consider some possibles?
Stevens wins. Stevens resigns. Sarah appoints herself US Senator
from Alaska. Sarah wins special election. Sarah has as much Fed
experience as Obama has now in 2012.
Just think how much fun you could have with Sarah and Mitch both
around.
I’m not sure any staff member of this Herald-Leader has any credentials to comment on the Republican party or conservative views. This is just another attempt by the liberal media to provide news coverage that is tainted by their liberal bias. Let conservatives decide whether or not they believe Governor Palin is the future of the party.
Just like the mainstream media, the Hearld-Leader obviously fears the young and vibrant energy that Governor Palin brought to this election season. As such, they must now attack her with negative energy as it is clear that they fear the popularity and the experience she could gain in the next four years. The interesting thing about all these “exit polls” is that they are completely unreliable, yet the media is using them to further their agenda.
I know a large number of individuals that were energized by the selection of Governor Palin. As a conservative, I am not delusional at all about Governor Palin’s role in the future of the conservative movement. And even if the Governor decides not to run in 2012, her involvement in this election has provided many with encouragement for the future of this Country.
So Mr. Keeling, please enjoy your day in the sun. Your biased politics finally persuaded a majority. Enjoy it while it lasts as the past few years have demonstrated this newspaper is dying and soon you will have no platform to spread your biased agenda.
Sarah Palin might not be the future of the GOP. But she was the right choice for the GOP ticket. Lest we forget McCain had a lead going into the economic meltdown. The idea that Sarah Palin in under qualified is a myth still being thrown out by the media. Obama has only served in public office 4 years longer than Sarah Palin. He\’s had no executive experience, advanced no significant legislation in a congress that a had an approval rating in the teens, he has spent 5 out of the last 10 years campaigning for office instead of legislating, was on the foreign affairs committee and yet had never taken a visit outside of the country. Sarah Palin on the other hand was a wildly popular politician in Alaska with an 80% approval rating. She tackled corruption in her own state, something Obama surely cannot claim. I\’ve always wondered why nobody questioned Obama as to why he would start his program of \”change\” in Chicago? Its probably on the most corrupt political systems in American yet Obama glossed over it.
Joe Biden on the other hand touts his foreign policy \”experience\” which includes being wrong on nearly every major foreign policy issue in the last decade and a half. Joe Biden is a regular buffoon and yet has a gotten a free pass from the media.
If Sen. Ted Stevens is elected and resigns or gets ousted from the Senate, I fully expect Sarah Palin to appoint herself to replace him. It’s exactly the kind of thing she would do.

I’m shocked to hear so many people lauding Sarah Palin. If she’s the future of the GOP then the Democrats will have control of Washington for several years to come. I’m a Republican and I’m proud to say I voted for Barack Obama because of Sarah Palin.
“It’s exactly the kind of thing she would do”? What does that mean Larry? That she “would do” something illegal?
I’d be very suprised if she went to the Senate. But if she decided to appoint herself, she has the legal right to do so. I believe she has bigger fish to fry though….
I keep hearing all this talk from Obama supporters about “reaching out to Republicans” and “bringing all the negative politics to an end” and “bringing America together”. Yet, the attacks on Sarah Palin continue. I am willing to give Obama a chance, but these attacks on Gov. Palin are giving me second thoughts… It is time for conservatives to take back the Grand Old Party.
In this election we saw and found change. The Democrat party must accept the change - and we deserve change in our local newspaper. Whether we like it or not - it’s all we have right now (even though it’s in decline badly). Our paper needs to change - quickly!
You’ve had your day - your comments are “old time”, your bias reeks, and your simply haven’t a place in the changes of today. Go to the places old, angry people with outdated ideas go and leave those of us on the path to the future alone.
Retire now.
Most of the attacks on Palin I’ve seen lately have been coming from McCain staffers. Loved the one about her not knowing Africa is a continent instead of a country.

The attacks are coming from moderates in the McCain campaign, you are right on there Larry. But, the left is taking them and running with them. Do you really believe she didn’t know whether Africa was a country or a continent? Come on. These are middle school attacks.
These are the same bitter people in the McCain campaign that contemplated switching parties after their defeat in 2000. These are the same bitter people that inquired about McCain being Kerry’s VP pick in 2004. And now, after picking a conservative for VP in 2008, they are bitter and lashing out at the one person in this campaign that energized the Republican base. Without Palin this would have been a total landslide.
Sarah Palin is the right person to take up the conservative mantle in the GOP. If it was another person, you would attack him/her too, just because he/she was a conservative.
By the way, I’m a few threads late on this Larry, but nice job in trying to use the “progressive” label in terms of describing “liberals”. That’s the same as calling the “Censor Act” the “Fairness Act” that congress is wanting to bring back:)
Sara Palin for President.
Sure, that’s a good idea. That will just make a second term for Obama more secure.
The Governor of Alaska may be back, just as I have posted before, but not as the choice of the GOP for President. You may see her in the Senate, if Stevens is turned away, but . . . I do not believe she is Presidendial material.
The fascination is over . . .
Reality returns, THE GOP nominated the wrong candidate for President.
