U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler had made it clear in recent week that he and Bruce Lunsford had made amends over the 2003 Democratic gubernatorial primary in which the two exchanged attack ads before Lunsford dropped out and endorsed House Speaker Jody Richards before going on to endorse Republican Ernie Fletcher in the fall. Chandler had also indicated that, at some point, he would endorse Lunsford’s challenge of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell this fall.
So, the announcement of that endorsement in front of Kentucky’s delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Denver was not in itself a surprise. But the fact that the endorsement led to the two hugging each other? Wow! That’s some serious making up by the formerly bitter antagonists.
