Stumbo’s strongest signal yet

Writing about the potential impact Zana Renfro, the Democratic candidate for the 3rd District state House seat recently vacated by Frank Rasche, might have on state Rep. Greg Stumbo’s expected challenge of House Speaker Jody Richards, the Paducah Sun’s Bill Bartleman reported the following:

“Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, was one of the first people to call Renfro on Saturday after she was picked. He also invited her to a luncheon he hosted Monday in Frankfort to introduce House candidates to potential campaign donors.”

If Stumbo is helping D House candidates find the folks who can help finance their campaigns, it’s a pretty solid bet he indeed will try to unseat Richards.

BTW, Renfro, a McCracken County commissioner, won the nod over Richards’ preferred candidate, Paducah City Commissioner Gerald Watkins.

Stumbo said Tuesday about eight candidates attended the luncheon, including Renfro and three others who are hoping to win election to the House for the first time: Mike Lawrence, who is challenging incumbent Rep. Steven Rudy in the 1st District; Martha Jane King, who is vying for the vacant 16th District seat of retiring Rep. Sheldon Baugh; and Kent Stevens who beat Rep. Milward Dedman in the 56th District Democratic primary. Stumbo also said he had dinner with a House member Monday night and lunch with another member Tuesday.

He appears to be working hard while Richards is in Denver at the Democratic National Convention.
